Organisations

The trans community is really quite small, and organisations are as good or as bad as the sometimes very small number of people involved in keeping them going. There are some dedicated people out there. Here are a few links…

Gendered Intelligence supports young trans people aged 11-25. There are monthly meetings at the Old Fire Station in Silver Street.

Mermaids  is a support group for gender variant children and teenagers, and their families.  Our goal is to relieve the mental and emotional stress of all persons aged 19 years and under who are in any manner affected by gender identity issues, and their families.

The Gender Trust ‘supporting all those affected by gender identity issues’. They have a telephone helpline too.

GIRES ‘information for trans people, their families and the professionals who care for them’

Avon Trans Women   “a self help group serving Bristol and the surrounding area…”

Trans Media Watch a relative newcomer, and one to watch.

Press For Change a campaigning organisation. Their website has a lot of information about the legal aspects of being trans.

Charing Cross GIC the Gender Identity Clinic at Hammersmith. This is their new website, and it has lots of useful info, including links.

Counselling Directory allows you to hunt for a counsellor local to you and in your preferred specialisation. Be discriminating when you are looking for a counsellor; it can be more important to find someone on the right wavelength for you, than to find someone with a declared specialisation.
